Most of the 4th gen cars are equipped with a 4l60 or 4l60E transmission. The shift consoles for the 4L60E came in 2 different styles. One came with the indicator showing P RND321 and P RND32. Gm blocked out the 1st gear on these cars due to excessive exhaust noise when shifted into 1st gear. Here is a free mod to solve not having first gear.

First off you need to remove your shifter handle. To do this you need a small standard (flathead) screwdriver. Located on the front of the shift handle is a "staple" looking clip. From the top wedge your screwdriver in to the clip gently and pry out SLOWLY. The clip should come out easy. Once this is done you will need to pull up on the handle and viola it is off.

Now in your cupholder (for some godawful reason they put this here) is a screw. You need to remove that. Set it aside so it does not get lost.

Now open up your center console. Inside on the front of the console are 2 rectangular holes. You need to reach in them at the same time and push the 2 plastic "clips" that hold the top of the console on and pull up on the top trim of the console. You need to remove the blck clip on the console light at this time also by prying it off gently with your standard screwdriver.

Once you have the console loose pull it off and set it aside in a safe place.

Now looking in the shifter area you will see it has "teeth" to lock it in each gear. Pull back your shifter all the way till it stops. Looking down at the base of the shifter you will see a small black square that stops it.

Push the shifter back into park. Using a hacksaw, utility knife or kitchen knife, cut the box right along the back edge against the shifter rail. DO NOT cut back into the shifter rail.

In a few seconds it will be off and you can reinstall everything in reverse order.

I love having this option now cause I can cruise in first gear and when I want to I can stomp the gas and break the tires loose. :)
